Oprah STILL Doesn’t Get Social Media

C’mon – really???

Oprah apologizes for TV tweets

Oprah Winfrey has issued an apology for breaking TV ratings rules and urging fans to watch her show “Oprah’s Next Chapter” show during the Grammy Awards telecast on Sunday.
The TV titan took to Twitter and invited followers to change the channel to her OWN network. She wrote, “Every1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Nielsen box.” During a commercial break later, she added, “Commercial Grammy people..u can turn to OWN.” Ratings compilers at Nielsen weren’t from amused seeing the plea as a violation of their policy. Winfrey’s tweets were later removed.

In a statement to The New York Times, Winfrey said, “I removed the tweet at the request of Nielsen. I intended no harm and apologize for the reference.

The Game Stop Fiasco

So, Game Stop, a Brick & Mortar (and on-line) game retailer has put it’s collective foot in their collective mouth (and more.) Here’s the synopsis and link:

Basically, Game Stop told it’s managers to open a sealed copy of a new game, which included a code for a free on-line version, and remove the code slips.

Those who opted for a physical copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution were greeted with a pleasant surprise yesterday. Included with the retail game was a code that could be redeemed for a free OnLive copy — unless, of course, the game was purchased at GameStop.

GameSpy reports it heard from multiple GameStop customers complaining about opened games and missing codes. It also heard from an anonymous source claiming to be a GameStop employee showing what appears to be management instructing employees to remove and discard the OnLive codes from all PC copies of the game.

Bad news, right? Who is Game Stop to remove a bonus that the developer decided should be in there? Well, look at the following (dead-on) video from Gary Vaynerchuk. As Gary states, even if GameStop was doing what they thought was right in their corporate minds, they did it the (very) wrong way. Of course, with hindsight being 20/20, GameStop should have (and should have the oomph to) call the developer and tell them they wouldn’t carry the game the way it was packaged.  Give Gary a look-see here:

What’s Better?

Many businesses now have a Facebook page (if you don’t you should call us, but I digress.) Once you hit 25 “Like-rs” you can get a custom URL for your page (like www.facebook.com/cellcon.)

BUT let me ask you this: When advertising your Facebook page, which would you (as a customer) remember more:

www.facebook.com/companyname (and that’s if it’s available. If someone else has a similar name you’ll have to think of something else)   OR

www.yourcompany.com/facebook?

I think the 2nd option. It reinforces your brand name by putting YOU first and it’s incredibly easy to do. Just create the page (or have us do it for y0u) and forward it to your FB. Page.

Other advantages?

  • You can’t have a Facebook custom URL until you hit 25 “fans”; you can do this immediately.
  • It doesn’t matter if someone else has “your” URL.

What do you think?
